Florida Education Association founded. The new organization of public
education employees becomes Florida's largest union.
Florida's two public education employee unions completed a two-year merger process and created a new statewide organization at a founding convention held Saturday, May 13, at the Hyatt Orlando Hotel in Kissimmee, Florida.
The merger of Florida Teaching Profession-National Education Association
and Florida Education Association/United has produced the "FLORIDA EDUCATION
ASSOCIATION." A new organization of over 120,000 members, FEA will speak with a
powerful and unified voice on behalf of more than
250,000 public education employees and 2.4 million public school children.
More than 1,400 delegates at the founding convention selected to call the new organization, The FLORIDA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, the original name of the organization established in 1886. The new FEA is now the largest employee union and the largest professional association in Florida.
Maureen Dinnen was elected as the first president of the new
organization. President Dinnen is a history and government professor at Broward Community
College in Fort Lauderdale. She has a long and distinguished record as a public education
advocate and a total of 34 years of teaching
experience. Dinnen has previously served as President of FTP-NEA.
"Both organizations have always believed that Florida deserves the
very highest quality public schools," President Dinnen said. "We have stood
together as Florida's strongest advocates in the fight to increase salaries, improve
working conditions and advance the education profession, and we have
now joined together as one, under our new banner the FLORIDA EDUCATION
ASSOCIATION, to pursue our most important mission --- to support and improve public
education, the foundation of our free democracy," said Dinnen.
Other officers elected at the Founding Convention are:
· Andy Ford, First Vice President
· Bob Lee, Vice President for Financial Affairs
· Joanne McCall, K-12 director
· Carolyn Underwood, Minority Affairs Director
· Jim Wilson, Higher Education director
· Linda Elliott, ESP Director
· Rita Moody, Director at Large
· Tony Gentile, Director at large
Honored guests who attended the founding convention included U.S. Sen. Bob
Graham (FL); Sandra Feldman, President of the American Federation of Teachers; and Bob
Chase, President of the National Education Association. Long-time FEA/United President,
Pat L. Tornillo, Jr. served as the Founding Chairman of the convention.
The merger could pave the way for the merger of the national school employees unions, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers. The Florida Teaching Profession-NEA was affiliated with the NEA and the Florida Education Association/United was affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers. Florida becomes the third state to complete the merger process following Minnesota and Montana.
