Reducing Teacher Overload
January 5, 2012
The increase in teacher workload responsibilities continues to be the number one
teacher concern. Using the findings compiled from school meetings and member
phone calls, along with the feedback provided through the “DTU Teacher Workload
Survey” (see attached), DTU scheduled a meeting with DCPS District
administration. On January 4, 2012, DTU
leadership, President Terrie Brady and Vice President Ruby George, along with
DTU Staff Consultants, Tammie Brooks-Evans and Mirta Martinez, met with
Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals, Deputy Superintendent Patricia Willis, and
Chief of Academic Services Kathryn LeRoy to discuss the DTU findings. Discussed
at the meeting was the increasing number of responsibilities placed on teachers
which has caused high levels of teacher stress and overload district-wide.
It is the goal of DTU and the Superintendent to create and implement a plan that
will reduce teacher overload by:
·
identifying Federal, State, and District required responsibilities for teachers
·
implementing required responsibilities more efficiently
·
consolidating responsibilities where appropriate
·
eliminating duplication
·
eliminating those tasks no longer deemed necessary
The DTU leadership and staff are aware of the extra hours worked and personal
sacrifices made by teachers in order to meet Federal, State and District
requirements. DTU will continue to
advocate for teachers in order to provide some relief.
The next meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2012. DTU will keep you updated as
the final plan nears completion.
